Are you hiring a household goods mover or a moving broker? What is the difference?
A moving broker is a company that arranges the transportation of your cargo by contracting with for-hire carriers to provide the actual truck services. These moving brokers primarily function as sales teams that book your move and coordinate it with an actual moving company.
Unlike trusted movers like Mayflower®, a moving broker does not take on the responsibility for, nor is it authorized to transport, your household goods. Brokers lack moving trucks and professional movers. For interstate moves, moving brokers are required to use only those moving companies that are registered with FMCSA.
Brokers charge by the cubic feet because there are no DOT regulations that protect you from the broker saying you took up more space and charge you more.
There might be situations where the broker fails to secure a moving company for various reasons—such as low estimates, unavailability, or limited resources. This can leave you without a mover on your moving day. Many moving brokers operate from call centers located throughout the country.
